The journey to Punakha city starts early in the morning at Thimphu, which goes through the highest Do Chula Pass (3077m). This pass overlooks Bhutan’s highest mountains and represents the historic 108 Chortens and prayer flags decorated at the highest point here. After the fruitful stop at the Do Chula Pass, driving to Punakha Valley will continue. Arriving at Punakha, a small hike takes you to reach the very famous Chimi Lhakhang Temple. Related to Lama Drukpa Kuenley, who is known for his crazy teaching methods. This temple is renowned as the place for fertility, where thousands of childless women come to receive blessings from the lamas, also they believe that touching the head of a 25 cm wooden phallus may grant them a child in the future. Also, local society commonly uses the phallus as a symbol to protect against negative energies.
Later driving through beautiful Bhutanese villages and the riverside, you will reach the beautiful Punakha Dzong. Located at the confluence of the Pho Chu and Mo Chu rivers, this fortress served as the former capital of Bhutan until 1995. Capturing the beautiful architecture of this Punakha Dzong will be a lifelong memory for travelers.
